Suikertunnels 2022-2025 , copmpleted in 2025
Suikertunnels is commissioned by Kunstpunt Groningen and the municipal of Groningen. The Artwork is part of De Suikerzijderoute, a new cycling and walking route connecting the city centre to the future Suikerzijde district. The artwork is located in two underpasses along the route, beneath the railway and the western ring road.
In the artwork on the inside of the Suikertunnels, past, present and future (dream) come together. Artist Wineke Gartz created a transparent collage of colour, rhythm and lines. The design is a landscape in which timelines and movements play a role. A mix of progress and old technology. Fragments of history, the current situation and the future are woven into the artwork.
A picturesque composition of photo and video images, drawn images and collages can be seen on panels on the walls. The coloured images alternate with smaller areas of bare concrete. Large painted areas of colour can also be seen on the ceilings. “The viaducts and the art application together form a sculptural unity.” (W.G.).
The collage reflects the rich craft and industrial history of the area. It features elements such as the De Hoop oil mill, De Bok sawmill, the Sugar Factory, historic shipyards, and the Hoendiep canal, once used for horse-drawn barge transport — depicted through images of ships, manual labour, ropes and cranes. The surrounding Zeeheldenbuurt neighbourhood under development and the current Suikerunie site are also represented.

Suikertunnels 2022-2025, gerealiseerd in 2025
Suikertunnels is gerealiseerd in opdracht van Kunstpunt Groningen en Gemeente Groningen als onderdeel van De Suikerzijderoute, de nieuwe fiets- en wandelroute die de stad Groningen met het toekomstige stadsdeel De Suikerzijde verbindt. Het kunstwerk bevindt zich in twee onderdoorgangen van de route, onder het spoor en de westelijke ringweg
In het kunstwerk aan de binnenzijde van de Suikertunnels komen verleden, heden en toekomst(droom) bij elkaar. Wineke Gartz maakte een transparante collage van kleur, ritme en lijnenspel. Het ontwerp is een landschap waarin tijdslijnen en bewegingen een rol spelen. Een mix van vooruitgang en oude techniek. Flarden van de geschiedenis, de huidige situatie en de toekomst zijn in het kunstwerk verweven.
Op panelen op de wanden is een schilderachtige compositie van foto- en videobeelden, getekend beeld en collage te zien. De gekleurde beelden worden afgewisseld met kleinere vlakken kaal beton. Ook op de plafonds zijn grote geschilderde kleurvlakken te zien. “De viaducten en de kunsttoepassing vormen zo samen een sculpturale eenheid.” (W.G).
De collage laat de rijke ambachtelijke en industriële historie van de plek zien. Onder meer oliemolen De Hoop en houtzaagmolen De Bok, de Suikerfabriek, scheepswerven en het Hoendiep als kanaal voor de trekvaart- met beelden van schepen, zware arbeid, touw en hijskranen – komen hierin terug. Ook zie je de Zeeheldenbuurt in aanbouw en het huidige Suikerunieterrein.
